First combined heart-liver transplant in Brazil for transthyretin mutation amyloidosis: impact of the liver on reducing anti-HLA antibodies
Cardiac amyloidosis is characterized by amyloid deposits in the myocardium with functional impairment. Transthyretin (TTR), produced mainly by the liver, can carry mutations associated with familial amyloid polyneuropathy. Combined heart-liver transplantation is a therapeutic strategy with good outcomes in selected cases, potentially reducing immune rejection, especially in HLA-sensitized patients.
